Solihull derived its name from a ‘dirty or muddy’ or soily hill which was given to passers by at the time.

1220 – The Church of St Alphege was founded by Hugh de Oddingsell

1242 – Solihull was granted market rights

1560 – Solihull school was founded

1690 – Brueton Park opened

1836 – The Solihull Poor Law Union was founded

1872 – The Solihull Union Rural Sanitary Authority was created

1894 – The Solihull Rural District Council was created

1901 – The population was 7,500

1932 – The rural district became an Urban District Council

1954 – Solihull was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation as a Municipal     Borough

1964 – Solihull became a county borough

1974 – Solihull County borough was merged with Meriden to form the      Metropolitan Borough of Solihull

1994 – The High Street was pedestrianised

2002 – Touchwood Shopping Centre was opened by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd
